“The Sprained Ankle”

This is one of the most common medical conditions affecting the human ankle. It usually involves a tear or partial tear of one or more ligaments. The injury will cause fluid leakage and the tissue surrounding the joint will swell.

The swelling will add to the pain of the injury and will worsen as the pressure increases. The area will generally become warm and red as blood flow increases. Joint mobility will be reduced.

The most common type of ankle sprain is an Inverted Ankle Sprain, affecting the ligaments on the outside of the ankle. This injury accounts for 70% to 85% of all ankle sprains.

Treatment commonly consists of “RICE” (rest, icing, compression, elevation) or “PRICE”(protection, rest, icing, compression, elevation). Walking boots and bracing are also generally used in treating this condition.
